I remember reading somewhere that the average person changes careers seven times in one lifetime. I think it’s safe to say that I’ve switched careers at least twice now before the age of 30. I went from full-time student to full-time employee to a creative freelancer pining for a position in the cannabis industry.
How did I get here? After I received my degree in design I was ready to accept my fate and loyally go into the fashion/apparel industry and gladly stay there. Needless to say, I was hungry and wanted to start my place, so naturally, I was networking like crazy to learn as much as I could and build as many connections as possible. I decided that my design degree alone was not enough and decided to go back to school part-time to build some necessary skills in the business end of fashion/apparel. This was when things really started to pick up and change. I received a job offer from one of the connections I had built and landed a position in the apparel industry. I naively thought, YES! This is my time and chance!
Flash forward a year later, I happily left that job and decided to pursue my cannabis calling.
My cannabis calling began that fateful semester when I was given the assignment to create a faux business. For the research, I spoke to a lot of my personal friends that are cannabis users and as I spoke to more women, the same response always came back “…You should start this up for real..” And I giggled it off and thought they were crazy. I remember jokingly responding “…If I get an ‘A’ on this assignment, I’ll actually pursue it.” Thinking that it wouldn’t happen.
Needless to say, I got an ‘A’ on the assignment, which is why this blog exists now.
Everything started very slow however, I stayed at my job for six more months before I made the decision to fully pursue Blunt B.A.E.. During those six months, I took every opportunity to learn as much as I could about the industry. I went to as many events, read all the articles I could manage, and networked and talked and listened to as many industry people as I possibly could. Then I realized that what really made me change my mind about my career was based on how great the Canadian cannabis industry is.
The cannabis industry was just incredibly warm and welcoming. Everyone I spoke to have treated me with nothing but kindness and openness – a complete and total 180 from the fashion industry. During this time, I found out that a senior-level employee at the company I was working with was leaving the company to work for Canopy Growth. I immediately demanded to have lunch with her and we both agreed that cannabis is the future. At that point, I was sold.
I knew I was ready to leave and answer this calling, but ‘when’ was still a question. It really wasn’t that hard, and it really hit a breaking point by the holidays of 2018. At the start of the new year, I was done. The burn-out was true and real, and I couldn’t wait to start on my new adventure and pursue Blunt B.A.E.
I am here writing to you all to let you know that I am answering the call for Blunt B.A.E. and to all the Blunt B.A.E.’s out there! Thank you for your continuing support and let’s keep talking!
